That's certainly been the case with the tele cable, where it's buried. It has dozens  of hasty splices between here and the switching station.

We are hoping for a more piecemeal  approach.
The last week, a couple of miles out, a big school of fish, 
sometimes with  herds of seals or dolphins in hot pursuit

Don't know what kind of fishes.
A gray whale and her calf were right down below us a couple of days ago.
At least we will have company when we fall in.
