I've long imagined a junkyard and shop on rails that would seasonally migrate up and down the coast,
Thus staying in a zone of of temperate green, wild mushrooms and good fishing, year round.

Hwy 1 is kind of a silly proposition...spectacular but inordinately expensive to maintain.
