Subject: Re: [TheForge] Press Update
a 40 ton ironworker is great- but its not a press.
You need both.
buy the ironworker, post haste.
just realize that almost all ironworkers use a swivelling bar system, with the bar pushed up and down by the hydraulic cyllinder, with the punch at the high end, and the shear in the middle.
Not optimum shape or configuration for a press for forging.
Usually an ironworker has a short throw, no room for tooling, as ironworker punches are only a couple of inches long. It will have a shallow throat as well. And due to the way its setup, its usable for some limited forging, but, really, not that great.
However, an ironworker is a wonderful thing to have in the shop. Once you have seen it effortlessly punch a 1" hole in 1/2" plate, you will never want to drill another hole. Once you can shear up a pile of 20 footers into your smaller sizes in 15 minutes, your saw will sit unhappily ignored in the corner.
Buy it, but accept the fact you still need a press.

So I stopped by and had a look at the press that my welder has for sale and it turns out that it is a 40 Ton Ironworker. I didn't get to snap off any pics because it was raining and cold. He tells me that he used it this past summer. It is in need of some TLC, but the motor/tank/lines are all encased on the back side of the unit. It looks like the lines will need to be replaced, but that isn't a big deal. The major concern I have now is getting it delivered and I need to know what size pad I should pour if I can't fit it in my garage. I am going to go back when the weather is better and get some pics/measurements. I'll keep you all informed.
Thanks again for all of the input on the 100 ton that I was/might still be entertaining building. I think if my partner wants to buy me out on the ENERPAC stuff I'll let him build the 100 ton.
Thanks Guys
Mark
