While looking for the name or the tool I did find this:

It's not the one that I was referring to, but it will certainly work. 
Looks like a little time on a lathe would duplicate that one.
Your friend and I might remember the same tool, which had a clamp to 
hold the pipe and an arm that revolved and flared the pipe end much like 
a spinning lathe but real s-l-o-w compared to the lathe.
