Apparently he did go straight. Straight through the middle of his finger.

In college I worked in cabinet shops, among other places.
One place in Long Island City was a high end custom shop. Everything
was hella-expensive. Everyone in the shop was loaded all day on beer...
except me.
One day one of the guys decided he was not going to drink on the job.
He proceeded to split his right index finger right up the middle on a
1/32" kerf veneer blade. The cut was so perfect, the doctors did no
surgery. They taped his finger back together and several weeks later he
went for physical therapy.
So much for going straight.
