Saint Phlip,
Wow, you spent a lot of time looking up all of those shields.
To my way of thinking (and that is all that I can attest to) not one of them
looks anything like a helmet.......
(definition 1.a, which means that it is the most common usage)

I must admit that I was not familiar with the word that you sited "balacava"
so I looked it up,,,

Hmmm, a wool cap, hmmm, what does that have to do with welding?
