I also wear bifocals, and after a conversation with my optometrist, I 
purchase a pair of single vision glasses ground for clarity at about 18" 
to 48". The original intent was to use them for computer operation to 
reduce neck strain from long sessions at the keyboard (I taught Autocad 
for 16 years.... the glasses really helped) and I also found that they 
improved my near vision for welding.

I didnt realize that the elements in the  helmets change the contrast over time.
when i attended the new england school of metalwork they turned me on to the 
cheaters 2-3.5 diopter magnifiers that i have taped inside the helmet to 
function like reading glasses. they work great. a cheap ammendment in addition 
to bifocals.
