[TheForge] Forging limits after surgery (& other safetyhints)OT:

Listen, guys, I appreciate our fun discussing our temporary physical
limitations and battle scars, but may I offer some words of admonition?

We all have sense enough to stay hydrated when working hot, but I almost
over did it last Sunday- It was about 100* and the humidity was close to
100%. I was forging spike knife blanks for a class and had a bunch of
them in a gas forge. As they reached forging temperature I drew them out
on the power hammer. I drank water but after a couple of hours I noticed
my focus would change with each heart beat and I felt like my energy was
being sapped. I didn't take my temperature but I would surmise that my
core heat was rising.

I then did what I should have done about every 15 minutes: I ran water
from the tap on the back of my neck and head until I felt normal again.
Florida is hot and humid and the heat sneaks up on you. My 8 year-old
great granddaughter saw me later- "Paw Paw, your hair is a mess". Is
this a case of function over esthetics?

"Stay cool" is more than a pop expression. "Stay hydrated" doesn't mean
drink beer. Ron C
