You can also weld without flux with some practice. (I use flux) But one 
of the UMBA DVD's (RD70) with Mark Pearce demonstrates this technique.

I've tried several fluxes, and one of these days I'm going to work up 
some sample pieces welded with a variety of them. There are all sorts of 
concoctions. EZ-Weld, Crescent, many home-made combinations. I like a 
mix of boric acid and red iron oxide. (both available from pottery 
suppliers). It's less "slippery" than borax, but it requires a little 
more care in using it, as it doesn't melt into a glass quite as quickly.

Google around for fluxes. I'm sure you'll find plenty.
