The old saw has it that one should
"Never buy property in California in the spring time"
If you continue south from there on 101 there are some nifty rock formations, followed by a pretty nice bit of coast. The mountains between Solvang and Santa Barbara aren't bad either.
For my own taste..i prefer northern Ca for scenery...and folks too.
