I like Yak trax, rubber with spring wound around it in places, easy on and 
off.

They have a selection under traction aids
If you insist on making them the spring around a rope concept would work to 
co0py the yaks but I get about two years from them with occasional use and 
probably more if I took care of them(The rubber goes)
