[TheForge] broken anvil

In 1996 or 97 Tom thought it would make a great demo to forge weld a steel
plate onto an old anvil that had one come loose.
They started by preheating the anvil on an open top gas forge, It was then
moved to a pit forge like rosting a pig at a luau. At the same time the new
face plate was being heated in a regular coal forge. While things were
heating up Tom ran drills, so that when it was time there would be 4 guys
with sledge hammers to preforme the welding opperation. They miscalculated
just how hot the pit forge would get and when they pulled the anvil out a
large section (20 or 30 pounds) had been burned away. Tom then made one of
his best quotes ever, "It may need to dressed up a bit."
I had only been in BAM for a couple years at the time, so I was just an
observer, not a participant. I think that there are pictures on
www.bamsite.org. I have been meaning to go through the BAM archives to find
the original account, maybe I'll reprint it some day.
