Craig,
If following his logic, what you said would be true.
The only explanation that might support returning to the original shape,
would be if it had been bent cold there may be some shape memory. Even then
it would only return part way.
There are some plastics that have shape memory such as kydex used for
tactical sheaths. If you screw up the molding you can just reheat and it
will go back to flat.
Like someone said not all steels are the same, being an expert on one steel
doesn't make you an expert on all steels.

Since springs are made from even larger coils or straight stock, why don't
the springs return to their original shape?
