Not garlic - pepper extract.

As for mace, it would be equally dangerous to the person wielding it as 
to the attacker.  This stuff is just under 50% capsaicin.  Pure 
capsaicin tops the scale out at 16 million units.  You could etch your 
pattern welded steel in it, I am sure.
