[TheForge] Welding ball bearings

I believe I have read to grind a flat spot on a ball bearing before
welding to it. This is how some jewelers make large dapping punches,
which are essentially a ball on the end of a rod. Grinding seems to
redistribute the stresses inside the ball, preventing it from
exploding. I don't remember any mention of annealing, but I can't see
where it could hurt!

I believe I read this in the small publication "Tips and Tricks for
the (Jeweler's bench? Small Shop?) by Charles Lewton-Brain. I can't
find the book to confirm this, however. I am 95-per-cent sure of the
information that I remember, but would really like to find the
dag-nabbit book to be sure!
