I'd read that you should anneal before welding and that with an acid etch you can tel grain direction and to draw the ball in that direction, if using large ball bearings to get barstock from. This was in an article on using 52100 ball bearings for knife steel.

A friend said he was trying to weld on a ball bearing and it exploded.
Has anyone else had this experience? I anneal the bearing first and
since I'm welding it to mild steel I think it should be preheated.
