Hello David, and welcome.
As a guilty party here, let me apologize and hope it doesn't turn you away.
The easy way around what you'd rather not have to put up with,
is to set up a MAIL FILTER that dumps any message with " OT: " or "POL:"
in the subject line.
That'll get rid of 90% of the yammering..
Most mail programs make this pretty easy to do...
So, what sort of steel did you get?
And what tools do you have to begin with?
Many of the folks here really know what they are doing in a blacksmith shop!
Feel free to ask questions please.
Additionally, there are a number of good blacksmithing sites online with a real wealth of information to check out.
Try iforgeiron.com or anvilfire.com for example.
What style of smithing do you have in mind?
Most areas of the country have ABANA affiliates.
Go to the meets or conferences and you'll learn an awful lot in a short piece of time.
I do note that you are as articulate and opinionated as the rest of us...grin.
Last...as flame wars go, we are really quite sedate.
Have fun!...pf
