...and they have thick skulls -- literally. Maybe no thicker than Andy's,
but that's saying something, anyhow!
Again, I would probably never contrive to make a boar spear for actual use,
but thinking over this discussion I'd probably use the following approach if
I had to make one:
In my version, the cross-piece would pierce the blade, not the blade the
cross-piece. This is because the purpose of the cross-piece is to prevent
the boar from running up the spear. At the point the cross-bar were to
intersect the blade, I'd have a rather wide blade that I'd punch through,
round. I'd then run the round cross-piece through like a drift, and center
it in the blade. I'd flux the junction and reheat to a high forging heat
and upset a little bit from the edge of the blade at the point of
intersection. Thus, I'd be bringing back the spreading caused by punching,
without narrowing the width of the blade at all. Simultaneously, I'd be
rendering both the hole and the cross-piece from round to oblong, without
reducing the cross-sectional area of either blade or cross-piece, nor
reducing it's dimension cross-wise to the direction of thrust of the spear.
The change in the cross-sectional shape, however, would secure the
cross-piece into the blade, even if the weld, simultaneously effected, were
insecure.
If anyone follows this advice, I suggest testing the spear first on
something relatively innocuous -- like a speeding Mack truck -- before
risking himself hunting a boar!
