That's what i do...plumbing is cheap. The return line has to be a big enough diameter to
minimize line friction.

Right response. The next compressor i got  ( free) was from a gas station that had never drained their's either
and the nice old compressor was shot. The tank was almost completely full of water!
I rudely rebuilt it and used it for years.
I'm pretty good at rusty fittings by now.
