[TheForge] pattern welded steel

I was simplifying Mike... LOL leave it to you guys to nitpick the fine
points. Yes, flux serves several functions, but the primary is to stop
contact between oxygen and steel to prevent scale from forming. Fluxless
welding techniques are many and varied, but they all rely on the principal
of sealing oxygen away from the steel to prevent scale formation, at least
all the methods I have seen and tried do...

To be just a bit picky: That's "part of", not "exactly" what flux does.
It also combines with any scale that does form and lowers its melting point
so that the flux/scale mix is fluid enough to be squeezed out of the weld
joint under the hammer or press.

Right, Bruce? (Who has more years in chemistry that I do.)
