A strip cut from an old, unrecoverable carpenter's hand saw might do
it.  I've used that with mixed results.  The replacement spring for
the pedals of a pump organ -- about 7" long, curved and sustaining
quite a lot of deflection -- failed twice, probably because I tried to
harden and the spring-temper with a propane torch and didn't get it
quite tempered enough.  For a shorter, smaller-deflection spring, hand
saw stock should work pretty good.
