A strip cut from an old, unrecoverable carpenter's hand saw might do
it. I've used that with mixed results. The replacement spring for
the pedals of a pump organ -- about 7" long, curved and sustaining
quite a lot of deflection -- failed twice, probably because I tried to
harden and the spring-temper with a propane torch and didn't get it
quite tempered enough. For a shorter, smaller-deflection spring, hand
saw stock should work pretty good.
