You're welcome, Jim. Yes, its is a good one.

For extra credit, you can read Neal Stephenson's (fictional)
description of making Wootz in India in the late 17th century.  It's
in _The Confusion_ (second volume of The Baroque Cycle), chapter
entitled:

   Southern Fringes of the Mogul Empire, late 1696

   Jack inspects his realm in Hindoostan

Of course, you should read the whole three-volume epic, preferably
after reading _Cryptonomicon_ as well.  But if your reading time
doesn't allow for 3000 consecutive pages, however good,  just the one
chapter will suffice for blacksmiths. ;-)
