Resawing 8" on a 14" machine is going to the limit if it is possible. 
Not all saws are created equal. :)  But the Powermatics are good, so 
Mark might want to raise the upper guide to ist topmost usable position 
and measure from the bottom of either the rolls or the blocks, whichever 
are lower, and see whether they span at least, say, 8 1/8"  You 
definitely want some clearance there.  But there is more to it that just 
clearance.  I mentioned "usable clearance" - Some saws will not cut that 
well with the guides all the way up.  They are not sufficiently rigid. 
Don't ask me why this is so, but I have worked on a saw or two that for 
whatever reason were not very precise at the extreme of their capacity. 
  The only saws I've ever used that were not like this at all were the 
big direct drive Olivers - probably the best ever made, and the DoAlls.
