Pure iron rusts, tho slower than carbon steel. The silicon slag in
wrought provided a lot of the rust resistance.

If you've gotta come back every year, might as well use Penetrol or even
Future floor wax..both build up a bit after a few years, , probably
won't need annual coats...and are cheaper.
The traditional beeswax, turps and linseed oil is pretty enduring when
maintained too.
