I'm not sure what you mean by 10" for the jaws. Do you mean a
semi-circle with a 10" diameter for picking up pieces? (seems kinda big).
Or do you mean 10" on the "far side" of hinge point, and 22" on the
handle side? If this is the case, You might want to put the hinge a
little closer to the handle than the center of gravity. Then, when the
tongs are picked up by the handle, they will always close themselves.
Note that the hinge placement I mentioned also reduces the leverage at
the handle a bit, so the grip on the log will be a little less (in case
that's an issue) But you also don't have to open the handles as far
apart to pick something up.
Maybe may a prototype out of cardboard and see how it "works" ?
I probably went in the completely wrong direction on this, I usually do.
So please ask more questions if I'm unclear of went off somewhere into
the woods on this.
