>From watching the SOFA event and hearing of BAM's event years ago where they
burned up the anvil, I don't know if I would try forge welding on a new top.
Although SOFA got the top welded on after a couple of tries I don't believe
the finished project was a pristine anvil more like a door stop conversation
piece.
Last weekend I took a Tom Latane' anvil stake making workshop.
We forge welded anvil stakes out of 1 1/2" square.
Once the Tee was finished forge welding it got to be a very large piece of
iron to be moving in the fire and once up to heat to forge on the anvil.
The radiant heat on your hammer hand was immense.
I think Tom had 13 hours in his sample piece.
We forged welded 5/8" stock as a collar, forged a mortise and tenon for the
Tee, pinned and welded two cheeks as reinforcement for the Tee and then
forged and welded spring steel on the anvil surface.  Of course Tom doesn't
allow power hammers but we were allowed to use an electric drill for the
pins.
All in all it was a great learning expirenance.
I always knew I could forge weld but would not of tried 1 1/2" square stock
with out being forced to do it.  Actually the 5/8" welds were the hardest
then not burning up something important that was thinner while trying to get
the large stuff to welding heat was the next problem.

	Last year at SOFA's Quadstate conference the opening Friday night
demo was welding a new plate on an anvil. A big forge for the anvil, another
forge for the plate, a large chunk of iron to pound on with big hammers and
group of smiths all working together. A very interesting demonstration but
not for the faint of heart.

	Just like that, eh?  HAve you ever executed a weld that large?  If
you haven't, then you have no idea what you're getting into.

	The largest piece of iron I've had at welding heat was maybe 30#. At
that mass, standing 3 feet awway will earn you third degree burns if your
skin is not properly protected.  A 100-200# or larger mass will throw off
heat you cannot begin to imagine until you stand before it. 
Consider the energy requirements of getting that much iron up to welding
heat.  None of this is as easy and inexpensive as you may think.

On top of all that, there is the actual task of sticking the welds such that
they are sound throughout, another feat that most smiths are unlikely to be
sufficiently practiced at.  This is especially so when joining tool steel
with wrought, given the widely differing heat tolerances and requirements
for welding between the two materials.

The people who did this kind of work did it every day and knew the ins 
and outs of the process.   Doing it onesey-twosey constitutes an 
exercise in high risk where success and in some cases even safety are
