[TheForge] Cool stuff (was The mind 1st to go)

Absolutely agree Dave. Anyway, currently I am rather slavishly working to
get several large strap hinges made for our club forge before Sunday. The
old Home Depot ones are rather lacking in strength and we are sick of saggy
doors for our lock-up area so we decided to replace said hinges with pairs
made by club members as we did on one of the other buildings. We have the
good fortune to share grounds with the local historical society in return
for demoing and replacing/maintaining the hardware of the buildings.
Anyway, the things are 1/4x2x14 and one end needs to be offset to wrap
around the posts on the end. It is making me seriously reconsider some of
the aspects of my shop. Aside from the obvious need for a post vise, I am
finding the location of my anvil to be rather inconvenient when working with
a high fire. I keep burning my left arm on the dang smoke hood.
Unfortunately I can't come up with any alternative locations for it, as I am
currently in a very small shed. If the weather is clement, I can place the
anvil just outside the front door, but then the doors are kind of in the
way. Ah well, with a little luck this next year, my buddy and I will make
enough on the renaissance fair circuit around here for me to erect a small
pole barn and I'll solve my space problems.
Additionally, another friend who makes rapier blades for SCA style fencing
just handed over a small heap of end shearings of 1085 and 1075 12ga steel.
He stagger shears them and is left with a piece about 1 inch wide and 3-4
feet long. Perfect for stacking up with some nice 15N20. I got to sit in on
JW Randalls Damascus seminar at Quad-State this year and want to try some of
the nifty patterns he explained to us.
Sunday is the club's monthly hammer-in, and I am looking forward to seeing
what this month's demonstrator has in store for us, as well as I may be
demonstrating some more advanced Damascus methods for the old coots. :)

Gentlemen,
This whole thread has taken a bad turn.
Please let us stay civil and kindly and loving to all of our brothers and
sisters.
We all have so much to be thankful for and if you each would take the time
to count your blessings rather than waste your precious time taking jabs at
your fellow list participants, I am sure that you would be the better for
it.
TheForge has been slow lately, perhaps we should share our positive metal
working experiences with one-another and not worry too much about how the
other guys run their lives or conduct their affairs.
