It really depends on where you live.
In many areas of the country, it is now illegal to have plain old wood burning stoves, as they put out about double or more the annual amount of particulates as a "certified" model that has either a catalytic converter system, or other designs that cut down on particulates.

The barrel stoves usually are not too highly ranked, in terms of how much crap they put out, so, in many areas, particularly cities, they dont sell em.

The EPA rates wood stoves by particulate output- here is a link to several hundred that get good grades- all, of course, cost more than buying a kit and scrounging two barrels.
