A place I used to work did research on some very high power lasers. Infra red light at ridiculously high power levels. They used to run the beam inside aluminum pipe for safety reasons so that no one would get a body part in the beam. They safety demo was to remove a section of the aluminum pipe and pass a hot dog through the beam path. The hot dog would literally explode as the beam caused the water in it to flash to steam. That is probably what would have happened to the hosts finger if he had been so rash as to do that.
