With reservations I buy into the cheap tool first line also.
Most of the time, now, when I see the need for a tool, it is likely a
one of situation. After 40+ years in one trade I am equipped the things
I do regularly. So a cheaper tool that punks out after a few hours has
probably paid for itself and will not likely be missed.
The reservations :
1. I look fairly closely to judge whether the less expensive tool will
perform within the tolerance that I desire long enough for the task at
hand, and is not likely to kill me.
2. Whether or not the type of tool that I am buying will likely become a
permanent addition to the tool collection. I which case going the more
expensive route might make sense.Unless I want to try something out to
help me refine my decision making, in which case the less expensive tool
is tuition money.
There are also times I choose to just farm it out and let the guy with
the really good tool do the work.
