That's one of the versions of Brian's anvil design.
Basically they looked to be a thick slab of steel set on edge.
The top edge is segmented into different dies to work over,
including a larger flat, a couple of fuller like drawing profiles, a
butcher, etc.
I'd guess the theory would be that you are putting the the working anvil
mass
directly under the falling hammer, where it is most effective.
It also addresses the scarcity of decent anvils for beginners.
I saw a recent version that had some tall, stout, replaceable dies.

Understood..we managed to escape our glacial dial up ( Average 2-3K/Sec)
recently.
I started to add up the hours i spent waiting for the bloody thing and
concluded that the satellite ISP
wasn't so expensive after all.
