The one I made in Jerry Darnell's class was done by welding a collar
about one inch up from the bottom and the mounts have holes in them so
as to lift up through the top one and then set in the bottom one.
Don't remember asking about how to mount the brackets into the
fireplace, bad call on my part. All of the ones showen in the auction
catalog from Sorber collection are done this way, or with a tennon in
place of the collar, same with Early American wrought iron. also all
of the cranes at Lincoln's New Salem are mounted this way, I can look
the day after Thanksgiving and see if they are mortar or lead if you
want.
If any knows Jerry you could get a good answer from him or close
inspection of the fire place it is going in may give a good answer.
