Looks like it "fails" for the same reason that steel rod does: existing
fractures that bust loose when flexed.
Reminds me of the pickup load of 5/8 round that I got when I first started
pounding stuff- a concrete contractor had retired and gave me all his
stakes, from 1-8' long.
Not long after that a neighbor brought his ram's head poker back to get the
point tweaked. Heated the pointy end and laid it on the anvil, and the first
time I smacked it the ram's head on the other end popped off and rolled
under a table.
It might have been a crack from bending or forging too cool, but on the
chance that it was a flaw from all the pounding that the stake had taken
during its life I haven't made anything to be sold from scrappy old steel
since- the head sits on the shop wall with a few other Reminders.
