[TheForge] Equipment for a newbie

Mine is a very simple brake drum forge, bottom draft, with a hand
cranked blower. It's set in a table I fabricated out of 11 gauge steel
and some angle iron. I'll try to find you a picture. Friends of mine,
however, will inset their forge into a defunct gas barbecue grill, so
once the drop the lid, it's not obviously a forge (although the anvil
on the stump may give that away ;-)

Basically, taking things from the top, to build one, you need a flange
that screws onto some pipe, which fits into the hole in a brake drum,
goes down to a T fitting (on its side). You install a nipple to the
side that you can clamp the hose from your blower to, and another
straight down that deals with the ashes. The best thing on the down
pipe is a gravity controlled ash dump, but that's a bit complicated to
explain. On the top, you can use a cast iron shower grill to keep your
fire from falling down the hole. They're cheap, last quite a while,
and easy to replace.

My experience is that you really need an internal diameter or 2 inches
for the air to do its thing comfortably.
