I would keep at least a 5 pound, or better yet more like my shop, a 10 pound 
fire extinguisher next to  the area that you are working around. I keep at least 
one within clear sight and less than 20 feet away.

Basically, playing with fire is great fun!
But you ought to start modestly and
  have a real clear knowledge of what you are doing....
