I've got problems with fingertips splitting and am another voice for Bag
Balm. I haven't had any problems with long-term exposure, and in the middle
of winter I tend to smear the fingertips once or twice daily. That does a
great job keeping the splits down, but nothing is perfect. It seems after
using gloves, either the winter kind or leather work gloves, and doing some
fairly heavy work, I still get splits. Maybe the gloves draw moisture/oils
away from the hands?? So for small splits I will clip them with nail
clippers, then file the rough spots with a fingernail emery board.

Also, this time of year I tend to not use the Bag Balm often, so splits come
back. When they get really deep and start bleeding, I turn to Superglue. I
put a drop in the cut, then pinch to close it up, then dab a little on top
of the cut. That'll hold it for a couple days while it heals. And it makes
typing less painful.
