Japan drier, used to accelerate the polymerization of monomeric linseed oil in paint films contains cobalt alkanoate which is why it is termed interchangeably with cobalt drier in easel painting. I have used "Bowling alley paste wax" which claims to be largely carnauba wax for hardness,. mixed with linseed oil sans drier and applied it to hot metal so it smokes and blackens. it buffs well but is not an outdoor finish.
