Ralph Sproul would suggest a "gazinta" if that's a problem. Any kind
of sleeve or fixture on/in/under the bench and a corresponding one on
the vise that couple with it.  The bit on the vise gazinta the bit
under the bench but can be quickly removed when the space is needed.

Despite the elegance of Ralph's method, I only have one of these: A
vise that stands right up close to the heel of the anvil, attached to
a fixture that gazinta the hardy hole, obstructs the pritchel hole and
somwhat limits elbowroom but puts a vise zero steps from the anvil.
Lifts off and goes under the bench most of the time.

BTW, we haven't heard from Ralph for awhile.  Is he okay?
