[TheForge] Earthquake NNW of Anchorage...

We're all just fine thank you Wes. NOT being a professional builder I
overbuilt the house a bit, not only is it 2x6 framed with seismic ties to a
faretheewell and hurricane clips on every single joist, rafter and truss, it
isn't too uncommon for us to get winds well over 100mph right here on the
farmstead, but all the walls have 5" of Urethane foam insulation and the
trusses 7" of same. The last major quake, a 7pointer about 120 miles north a
few years ago barely made the house go bang, no rattles or shaking, nothing
fell, nothing. Zero damage at all. A mere 5 pointer, even if it was centered
about 40 miles from here isn't likely to do much to our place.
Darned if I know what magnitude scale the USGS is using now. I have an
experienced handle on the Richter scale but all the info on the site is now
in ML and I have zero idea how that feels.
On the other hand, looking over the site it seems we've had a few dozen
quakes in the last few days a number hypocentered (?) near Hayes volcano,
that could be interesting, we haven't been ashed for a couple years. Another
centered within 40-70 miles of Talkeetna and a bunch in Prince William
sound. The 1964 (Good Friday) great quake, a 9+ on the Richter scale, was
centered in Prince William sound somewhere. It raised most of the islands
and mainland an average of 35' while leveling most communities and clearing
debris with tsunamis from PW sound to Hawaii.
That's the kind of action that led me to build the way I did.
Jer
