In Nova Scotia, almost anything that is mostly shaded and sheltered
and doesn't move around grows lichen. Lichen on a roof is common in
older houses with large, overhanging shade trees.

There's way more lichen (of several kinds) in the woods here that I
ever saw anywhere in New England with the exception of some old forest
in the White Mountains of NH that the 19th c. lumber barons couldn't
reach.
