Condolences to both of you.
Putting our dogs down has been one of the hardest things I have ever had 
to do. It is part of the bargain though, to protect them from pain and 
suffering.

Odd thought has occurred to me lately.
It is really likely that the next dog, or perhaps the one after that 
will bear a different concern. That is who will care for them after they 
plant me? Changes the perspective just a tad.
