Garden sprayer with bleach, water, TSP and a hard bristle brush. Spray
and let soak when the sun is not hotting the roof and the roof is cool.
SCRUB,SCRUB,SCRUB and wrinse. Repeat as needed. THEN, at the peak of the
roof under the cap, mount some galvanized strip. When the rain it's the
galvanize it'll prevent that stuff from growing. Copper is better, but
way $$$. Trim any trees that are shading the roof from the sun. That is
the main cause of the problem...I know, just went through this a few
months ago. I haven't mounted any galvanize or copper. But I did trim
and scrub and rinse a SH _ _ load of roof!! ha

Subject: [TheForge] OT - Asphalt shingle rot? (Lichen)

So I went up on the roof today to do a little maintenance, and where I
leaned my ladder there was this big "splotch." "Bird turd," I thought.
But then I saw similar splotches all over the roof (like, a
dozen or two), ranging from 1/2" to 2" diameter. And they only
occurred on the northern slope of the roof. Looking closer, I saw they
weren't turds but lichens!

I've never heard of lichens growing directly on (mineral surfaced)
asphalt shingles. Is this common? Any remedy? I considered straight
bleach, but my gutters are aluminum.
