When I worked for a steel supplier, they use to send all the new guys out
and scrub steel pipe and bar with steel wool for days. After they were done
a bundle, they would coat it with a mix of diesel and used motor oil. The
oil lasted the longest and the diesel kept it stuck to the steel.
