Most electro chemical etchers use a "film developed" type stencil--like a silkscreen to pass electricity through to etch the metal.  You can also use the typewriter type stencil material but are more limited to type size/font of course.  The film type you are able to produce any image you can print on a laser printer or ink jet printer to clear acetate.  You use the image to create the stencil on the stencil material using light.  Then you develop this material in a liquid, much like film.  Knifemakers use them a lot.
