[TheForge] Enamel for iron

Anyone have any good information on making enamel for iron?  I have found mention of a few general ingredients but no real formulas.  There is also a lot of information about the application and firing process but they all begin with commercially made enamel.  What I am really looking for is details on how it was done before the age of industrial supply companies.  Thanks.
