[TheForge] brazing revisited

When I brush the heated parts of the metal the dead paint brushes off. Where the metal was not heated, but there is splatter, merely sliding a piece of metal across the surface causes the splatter to fall off. Since I usually start out with flat black anyway, it is sort of pre-painted.<G>

The splatter will "stick," but be loose enough due to the coating that it will come off very easily. And I don't have to worry about getting the oil based anti-splatter coatings off.

What do you use to remove the anti spatter, lacquer thinner? I remember
in the field one time some years ago we were installing a pretty large
expansion joint on a stack at a power plant. It was stainless and we
had to do a lot of welding on it. It was shaped like a bellows so there
was quite a bit of overhead welding which would have deposited a lot of
small balls of spatter. They bought some powdered mixture that had to
be blended with water. It was the consistency of light pan cake batter
that we brushed on. When it dried we did all the welding and nothing
stuck to it. I never saw it again but might be worth lookin up.
