[TheForge] OT - Snow in NJ

Well, maybe Jersey took the brunt. There's at least 2', maybe 3',
blanketing the (suburban) road I live on. This is rare because two
doors down lives one of the guys who drives the city snow plows. They
usually clear this street first thing, if only so those guys can get
to work. But the only snow plows I can hear are at a distance --
probably on the nearby arterial roadways.

This is the most snow I remember since moving into this house in
October, 1981. The worst I've seen before this was, maybe, two feet
or so, drifting to three or four in places -- like my driveway on top
of my car! That year I learned to park my car near the street.

Now the problem is that when the plows do come through, they'll have
an immense amount of snow to move. In Montreal, they load snow into
dump trucks and haul it out of the city. No such option here, I
expect.

What will happen is that the snows will push it to the sides of the
road, compacting it to ice, which homeowners will then have to dig
through to get to the street. I'm sure glad I have nowhere I need to
go, soon. My "remedy" is NOT to shovel the driveway, and maybe even
not the sidewalk (2 ft from the street) because that's where the
compacted snow will be pushed. With powder underneath it, I stand a
chance of digging out. If it's ice down to the pavement, I'll have to
get out the mattock to cut through.

So, I will probably do nothing much at all. Daytime temperatures
after today are forecast to be above freezing, with sun by Wednesday
and showers on Sunday. In other words, this all too shall pass --
even without shoveling!

Meanwhile, I got my snowshoes and X-C skiis down from the attic...
