Pete, when was this?
I am guessing we are talking early to mid 90's, and things are different now.
The chinese improve very quickly.
as for "6 pole" motors- that just means 3 phase.
The little Anyangs run a 5hp motor, the medium size ones might take a 7 1/2hp.
Lots of used 3 phase motors out there- Sure, they arent free, but five hundred bucks at most, for a 5hp.
A $5000 to $7000 tool requiring a new motor is something to be expected, periodically.
Sure, you shouldnt need a new one right out of the crate, but I havent heard of that before-
Dont doubt that it happened, but it happens with chinese tools from time to time- thats one of the reasons they are so cheap.
Again, you are talking about a tool where you are saving $100,000 over the cost of an equivalent US made one, probably more.
Thats right- Mike Bondi got a quote in the late 80's for a brand new 150lb Chambersburg self contained, a similar hammer in size, but not quality, to a 165lb Anyang.
The price was around $125k.
So, apples to apples, a new 5hp motor is still a tiny price to pay to save a hundred grand.
Even used, the american hammers are starting to go for pretty stiff prices- the last two big ones that sold around here, tuned and in good running condition, a Nazel 3b and the big Chambersburg that Russell Jacque had bought from Grant, both went for around $15,000. Plus, another 5 grand or so in transport, footings, and wiring.
So, even if they are a "kit", which the chinese hammers have not been for at least ten years, they are still miles cheaper than the alternatives.

Ries; a number of folks would disagree . There were handfulls of
casting sand and rocks all over the inside the first batch.
Helmut Hillenkamp is the worst i know about,,Piston too tight to work
properly, collapsed air passages in the casting..spent days grinding
them out..etc.
Got to know them so well that he fixed some other folk's too.
Gary Gloyne had to replace a broken ring right out of the crate, then
had to replace the contactor and then the motor capacitors several
times..then the motor. 6 pole motors are expensive!
Gary said Anyang was not at all helpful.
Seem to recall Mark Krause being called to work on one or more too.
