The air pillow is very bouyant, but the pool cover it supports is not.
The air pillow caused the cover to peak and shed water better and
insures a dead layer of air (insulation) between the pool water and the
cover. Beyond that, the purpose of an ice compensator is to give the
ice someplace to go, much like freeze plugs on a car (which I have never
had save a block, but have had destroy one from overheating when they
rusted out and ruptured). What would be the mechanism whereby
something floating above the ice layer would provide protection?
