A while back somebody mentioned an Amish tannery that sold good quality 
leather, traditionally tanned , at decent prices.
My friend Steve Martin ( no relation) who makes  wonderfully comfortable 
shoes, has been having to make do with  shrinking leather availability  
and rising prices
If any of you know where to refer him, it'd be appreciated....pf
